Query on reselling hosting: I recently purchased a hosting account with cpanel resell. I purchased a domain name from godaddy.com to set this hosting account up on. I have already updated the DNS on the domain name but get an error message:

Forbidden

You don’t have permission to access / on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Is there additional steps I need to take besides updating the DNS?

Answer:  When you are getting this error:

Forbidden

You don’t have permission to access / on this server.

Most likely this specific HTTP 403 error will only display on an Apache server.  To  solve this issue do the following:

1. Check the specific directory if it  has at least 644 or even better 755 which you can set via FTP using your FTP client permission. Or just type the following command:

chmod +x /home/domainname/public_html

After you check the directory permission and it appears to be fine, Apache DirectoryIndex may be incorrectly configured.  To solved the problem do the following:

1. Login to your terminal and make a connection to your server via SSH. Use application like putty and type:

a. locate httpd.conf  -> Find your httpd.conf file on your server and show files containing httpd.conf.

b. vi /locationoffile/httpd.conf -> Locate “DirectoryIndex”. It could be empty or shows an “index.html” file. If you are employing a PHP request and there’s no “index.html” but alternatively the “index.php” file  which is may be the reason why you had experiencing 403 forbidden error. Alter the DirectoryIndex like to something like this in particular:

DirectoryIndex index.html index.php index.sh default.jsp

c. Restart your Apach services.

/usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl restart
